Seriously, that's the funniest fake product site I've seen in a while.
Definitely worth a visit.
Linux and USB Headsets (T-Sonic TH-300MV)
I recently bought a USB Headset on impulse and didn't expect it to work with linux. At least not that easily.
It's a T-Sonic TH-300MV, but that doesn't really matter, I think.
More important, when plugging it in it was identified as:
- input: C-Media USB Headphone Set as /class/input/input4
- input: USB HID v1.00 Device [C-Media USB Headphone Set ] on usb-0000:00:1d.1-1
- usbcore: registered new driver snd-usb-audio
I could set the volume properties either using the mixer or alsamixer on the command line.
My primary goal was getting Teamspeak and Skype to work under linux. And on my PC using a headset without unplugging speakers etc. Also my old standalone was so bad that everybody kept complaining.

Firefox browser synchronization
If you're switching PC's frequently, or even just once in a while, you will love this Firefox plugin.
Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions.
The good part also is, that all your information is stored encryptet, so even google can
Virtual desktops for MacOSX
I've been always missing virtual desktops with my Tiger.
A couple days ago I stumpled upon VirtueDesktops
It does not offer all the functions of You Control: Desktops but it has all I need.
The current release is a late alpha, very stable, didn't crash once and did not show any bugs so far.
And in opposite to YouControl it is free.
That's a app I've been looking for a long time. GREAT :-)

Does Mac OS X phones home too?
With the dashboardadvisoryd being installed with the OSX 10.4.7 update the operating system is said to gain the ability to 'phone home'.
The demon is supposed to check for updates on any widgets and informs the users if any of them is out of date.
Taking a closer look at it one can see that the demon is just getting two files from the apple site but not submitting any sensitive data.
Windows apps on Mac without a Windows installation
But now it is possible to install it on Intel Macs to run Microsoft Windows software without having to install or boot into Windows.
codeweaver seems to be close to accomplishing this job with their Crossover Office.

Microsoft Trackball Explorer and Linux
To get the extra buttons of the Microsoft Trackball Explorer to work some minor edits must be done.
First check your Xorg.conf and adjust the InputDevice section
- Section "InputDevice"
- Identifier "Mouse0"
- Driver "mouse"
- # Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
- Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
- Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
- Option "Buttons" "7"
- Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
- # Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
- EndSection
Restart the X Server.
There is a nice little programm called imwheel.
Qunu - live help system
Just a couple days old Qunu already attracted lots auf users, being still alpha.
On the page http://www.qunu.com/en/index.html you can search for real time help to you problem and the system will hook you up via jabber to someone able to help you.
It's a community thing with no charges. In future there is a idea that users seeking high expertise will have to pay a certain ammount for help.
The stats at the moment:
- 43,400+ visits
- 870+ profiles
- 31,000+ searches
- 1,500 expertise tags
- 3,550+ help sessions donated
Looks like a good start for the page.
